Harper, tell me of the road...
Username: Kestrel
Character Number: First
Name: Sedelia. Often called Lia.
Age: Twenty-five, as of this season.
Birth Season: Summer
Gender: Female
Location: Bivium Weyr
Rank: Headwoman
That leads beyond this hold...
Appearance:
Sedelia’s hair is a pale shade of brown, that she keeps cut to just longer than shoulder length. She tends to keep it up in a ponytail for practicality's sake when working, but if she’s relaxing, she’ll usually let it down. Then, it hangs straight, refusing to curl at all. Considering the amount of time she doesn’t spend on her hair, it (thankfully!) keeps itself fairly neat. Her eyes are a clear shade that fluctuates between grey and blue, depending on the light, and are probably the feature that she likes most about herself, simply because she considers herself very plain otherwise.
She is, in fact, quite plain, but possess a homely, comforting but very quiet sort of attractiveness. Fairly short and lean, her slim frame belies the amount of muscle she’s worked to put on over the years. Her feminine curves are pretty much non-existent, and that suits her just fine, thank-you-very-much, because she doesn’t need randy Greenriders attempting to bed her at every opportunity. Her face is more oval than round, but somewhat lacking in well-defined cheekbones. She has a snub nose, and eyelashes that are surprisingly long, considering she does absolutely nothing to help them. Long fingered, her hands are elegant and agile
Clothingwise, Lia always makes sure that she is impeccably neat and tidy, feeling that appearances are very important. After neat, though, she puts practical and comfortable as very close seconds, and thus can rarely be found in anything overly elaborate, except for the rare occasions when she allows herself to dress up: for Hatching Feasts, Gathers, and the like. Usually to be found in warm colours, she has a particular liking for russet and burnt orange, shades she considers both friendly and dignified.
That wends its way around the hill...
Personality: The first thing that strikes one about Sedelia is that she cares. She really does, about absolutely anyone, and anything, and deeply, too. Anyone who crosses her path will find themselves being mothered by her – even if they are older than she is. That doesn’t stop her in the slightest, and she has such an honestly caring personality that, somehow, she gets away with it. She can be a little smothering, though, and sometimes finds it hard to accept the concepts of personal space – what do you mean that you don’t want a hug right this instant? Hugs make everything better!
Warm and open, she’ll make friends with utterly anyone, and is always willing to believe the best of people, no matter what. She thrives in company, and is highly gregarious, quickly growing depressed when not around people. In her interactions with others, she assumes that everyone is going to be a friend, and is undeterred by a surly welcome or initial lack of enthusiasm for her company – some people just need a little longer to get to know people, right? This rather naïve attitude, though it can be harmful, can also sometimes make people go along with her: because she believes so utterly that they can do what she asks, they do it.
In fact, that is a great deal of Lia’s philosophy. She tends to believe in people… and that somehow inspires people to act. She doesn’t get into arguments, no, instead she’ll very calmly, very patiently discuss something; and before you know where you are, she’s convinced you that you really did want to help out with the upcoming Hatching Feast, and you’ve also agreed to show some of the Weyrbrats a few of the tasks associated with being a Rider and you’re not really quite sure how.
It may surprise some people that such an open, rather naïve woman is Bivium’s headwoman – given current political climes - but then they look at the way she truly does feel for the Weyr and its people, and the way in which she frequently manages to get people to agree with her simply by believing that they will and broking no thoughts of disagreement and they begin to see why.
Beneath the surface, there is, in fact, a great deal of strength underneath that soft exterior. The ultimate soft outside covering a steely core, Lia will stand up for what she believes in when the time comes for it, and has no hesitation about sticking her neck out for a rather unpopular opinion or person. She doesn’t proclaim it loudly, but when push comes to shove, she will dig her heels in and will resist to the best of her ability – and she can be surprisingly stubborn when she believes she is supporting a just cause.
Does it go farther on until...
History:
Family:
Mother; Lianna, 50, fostermother at Eastern Weyr.
Father; Seden, 49, cook at Eastern Weyr.
Younger sister; Liade, 18, Journeywoman Weaver, currently posted to Bivium Weyr.
Turn 168, Winter: Seden and Lianna meet after Seden moves from Western to Eastern, due to a plethora of cooks at the former, and a lack of them at the latter. It isn’t quite ‘love at first sight’, but it’s very close, the pair of them soon spending their free time together, and it isn’t long before it’s generally accepted that Seden and Lianna are a romantic item.
Turn 169, Spring: Lianna discovers that she is pregnant, much to the delight of Seden, herself, and those that know the couple.
Turn 169, Winter: Despite the best efforts of the healers, Lianna goes into labour too early and the child is a stillbirth
Turn 172, Summer: Sedelia is born after a very easy pregnancy, to Seden and Lianna. Though initially worried given their previous failed attempt to have a child, the ease with which Lia is born does a great deal to assuage their fears that they couldn’t have children.
Turn 179, Spring: Seden and Lianna’s second child, Liade, is born, and Sedelia discovers the delights of having a younger sister. Even from this early age – and despite the gap in turns between them – the pair are close, Lia delighting in the role of the older child.
Turn 180, Summer: Lia, now eight, begins to help out around the kitchens under the eyes of Seden, and begins to understand more about the Weyr in which she lives. She’s not quite sure – even at this age – whether she greatly respects or rather fears Threaka for being such a strong-minded leading woman, though as she grows older her feelings begin to turn more to doubt, wondering if their Weyrwoman really is right in all that she says and does.
Turn 185, Spring: Sedelia, being Weyrbred, is automatically given the chance to Stand. Thoughtfully, she takes the opportunity, but after being left Standing decides that riding dragons isn’t really for her. Given that – rather unusually amongst her compatriots – she’d never shown any previous inclination of a wish to Impress, people accept this as not just sour grapes from not having Impressed, and Lia rather thankfully returns to the kitchens.
Turn 186, Autumn: As a gift from one of Sedelia’s close friends – a young green rider named H’lon, whom Lia grew up with and cheered on into becoming a Rider – Lia and her sister end up with a firelizard egg each. Sedelia’s hatches into Brown Zem, and Liade manages to Impress Blue Twitch.
Turn 188, Winter: Liade, being a strong-minded child even at the tender age of nine, declares to her parents and elder sister that she wishes to be a Weaver, and could she please be Apprenticed now? Bowing to her wishes, she is sent of to the Weavercraft Hall where, despite being quite young, she begins to make an impression, through both her bubbly personality and her clear skill. She and Sedelia keep in close contact with each other, using their firelizards to send messages back and forth.
Turn 189, Spring: Feeling somewhat dissatisfied with her work in the kitchens, and wanting more human contact in her day-to-day life, Sedelia becomes a foster mother, spending most of her first turn in this job helping in the crèche. It is at this age that she really begins to doubt in the leadership of Threaka, feeling that, surely, such an iron-fisted approach isn’t really necessary. She keeps her doubts entirely to herself, however, and externally is as loyal a citizen of Eastern as anyone else. And, in fact, she is loyal - but to the people of the Weyr rather than its leaders.
Turn 194, Summer: Grieda, the Headwoman of Eastern, takes Sedelia under her wing, and begins to groom her with the intent of making her the next Headwoman when she gives up the job. Sedelia takes to the teaching instantly, her quick wit and knowledge of how the Weyr works serving her well.
Turn 194, Autumn: Liade, aged 15, walks the tables to become a Journeywoman Weaver. Though relatively young for this rank, six turns of Apprenticeship and a definite flair in the Craft mean that she cannot be held back any longer.
Turn 195, Winter: Sedelia adopts a young canine puppy that she discovers wandering the corridors of the Weyr, clearly lost. The pup is soon named Delilah and living a very happy life.
Turn 197, Spring: Sedelia is not, perhaps, the obvious choice to become Headwoman of the newly constructed Bivium, despite her continuing tutelage under the wing of, given her relative youth and inexperience, but Grieda makes her case strongly, and Lia’s obvious enthusiasm for the task cement the decision. Most Weyrfolk, after all, aren’t that keen about being sent off to the new, untried Weyr, especially if it means having to deal with the Cogglers, and the Eastern leaders are keen to have one of their own in charge of – at least – the non-draconic elements of the Weyr. Threaka is personally of the opinion that the usually softly-spoken Sedelia may well be too weak to effectively manage as Headwoman, but given her history of dutiful service and the fact that she is at least looking forward to the chance, she agrees to the decision.
- Thus, Sedelia transfers over to the new Weyr with the rest of the riders and other Weyrfolk, and settles in quickly. Reluctant to cause any ruckus, she hasn’t tested the limits of her power and influences as Headwoman, though circumstances may cause her to do so. She’s rather looking forward, though, to the chances that this new Weyr will offer, though Eastern Weyr may well be disappointed in the fact that Sedelia’s loyalties are quickly shifting from her old home, to her new.
Turn 197, Summer: Liade follows in her older sisters footsteps and requests a transfer to Bivium Weyr, The Weavercraft oblige her request, and if her reasons for the move have something to do with wanting to try her hand on the Sands, on the basis that Bivum is likely to have less Candidates than either Western or Eastern… well, who can blame her?
It ends in sunset gold?
Pets: Brown Firelizard Zem, canine Delilah.
Pet Name: Zem
Pet Appearance: Zem is a very dusky shade of brown, his hide looking rather as though a dark brown background has been liberally splattered with a sandy, lighter shade of the colour. This rather splotchy effect makes him stand out amongst most browns, but in build he is very average, being stocky
and solid, though well proportioned. Overall, he’s a rather handsome little flit.
Pet Personality: In some ways, Zem is your absolute archetypal brown: laid-back and very practical. Nothing really gets him annoyed, nor particularly excited. He views the world through a very calm pair of eyes, and is incredibly patient, allowing himself to be pawed and patted with nary a word of complaint (rather helpful for when Sedelia needs to distract some of the resident Weyrbrats). Very amiable, he has allowed himself to be happily trained by Lia, and is now a very obedient beast. Affectionate, he can usually be found near Sedelia, and rarely ventures off on his own. Why should he need to, after all? Everything he needs is provided for!
Pet Name: Dela
Pet Appearance: Dela’s coat is primarily a pale fawn colour, though her chest and belly are white, the white fur edging up the underside of her tail and dappling down her legs in delicate spots. Her most obvious feature is her curly tail, the limb looping back over her rump and giving her a carefree appearance. Floppy-eared and quite slim in build, Dela has long, powerful legs and a pointed muzzle. In many ways, she’s your archetypal dog, with no pedigree bloodlines to speak of.
Pet Personality: She is… enthusiastic, to say the least, and wants to be involved in absolutely everything. Not the brightest spark in the box by any stretch of the imagination, Dela will fling herself into crowds and at individual people with great abandon, tail wagging and eyes bright, simply wanting to meet new people and be stroked and run around and have fun, and – oh, how wonderful life is! Always on the move, Dela’s skills at ‘sitting and staying’ are limited, to say the least, but she’ll be the first to leap after that thrown stick… even if she doesn’t bring it back. Growing older seems to be doing little to blunt her exuberance.
