Our art policy here is fairly simple.
1) All art that is not your own must be credited and used with permission. Crediting your art is simple. Just note somewhere under the art who did it, and, if they have a website or Deviant Art account, link it. For instance, if your best friend, Mary Sue Smith, did a picture of your character, you might credit it like this:
If Mary Sue Smith uses an online handle such as MarySue123 and prefers that, you might credit it like this:
If Mary Sue Smith has a website, the credit would look like this:
2) If it is your art, please just let us know so that we don't get after you about crediting. Your art is yours, whether you use it on our site or not, and nobody else is allowed to use it without your express permission. The administration certainly won't!
3) Official site art, such as hatchling pictures for dragons and/or firelizards or adult dragon pictures, world maps, and the images in the colours article, belong either to the site's resident artist (Briarwind) or may be considered a gift to you, if it is your hatchling. If the art is a gift, you may use it on other sites as well, if you wish, but you may not modify it in any way, and you must still credit it to Briarwind. If you're going to be using the art elsewhere, please host it yourself. All other site art is not to be used anywhere else for any reason.
4) Templates? Yep, that's art. If you don't know who did the template, you can't use it. Just credit them - and try asking around if you find one you don't know the source of. Your fellow players may know where it came from.
5) Photography is art. Credit the artist.
6) Play-bys? Those are art, too! However, we're not going to be quite as strict with this. If you are using a play-by of a famous person, such as an actor, model, or musician, simply crediting the name of the person in the picture is sufficient. For instance, if your bluerider looks EXACTLY like David Bowie in the Labyrinth (where did he find the glitter?), you can just put "David Bowie" under the picture you use, and I promise not to throw a fit.
If you are caught using uncredited art, you will be gently reminded to credit it. If you do not credit it within seven days, it will be removed by the administration. If any artist comes to us complaining that you are using their art without their permission, it will be removed immediately and you will receive a 7 day suspension. Repeat offenses will result in permanent banning. We take art theft very seriously, and do not want to see it happen. Ever.
